A new TV programme is set to chart the successful career of Belfast actor James Martin. The UTV programme BEING JAMES MARTIN looks into the life of the 33-year-including his acting career which has seen him go from a local drama group for young people with learning difficulties to winning Oscars. Rita Fitzgerald presents the programme and interviews James and his parents, Queen’s Professor Suzanne, and radio DJ Ivan, about his early life and the challenges and joys they faced with him as a child.

The Woman In The Wall

Gothic thriller THE WOMAN IN THE WALL is a sensitively crafted, fictional drama series which examines the legacy of one of Ireland’s most shocking scandals – the inhumane institutions known as The Magdalene Laundries. Ruth Wilson plays Lorna Brady, who was sent to her local laundry/home for being pregnant at 15. The baby was taken from her by the nuns and, like the rest of the young mothers, she has never known what happened to her child.

Barry Keoghan in TOP BOY

TOP BOY is set to return for its star-studded final season in September, this time featuring Irish actors Barry Keoghan and Brian Gleeson. Dublin-born Barry Keoghan has become one of Ireland’s most recognized talents, having received international acclaim for his swiftly growing filmography. He starred in Christopher Nolan’s 2017 war epic DUNKIRK and also appeared in CHERNOBYL, THE GREEN KNIGHT and Marvel’s ETERNALS. Most recently, he received an Academy Award nomination for his role in 2022’s THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN, alongside his Irish costars Colin Farrell and the father of his TOP BOY costar, Brendan Gleeson.

BELFAST actor Jamie Dornan reveals that he auditioned to play Superman in Zack Snyder’s MAN OF STEEL. Dornan took a unique approach to the audition process as he wore Superman pajamas to try and impress Warner Bros! While MAN OF STEEL could’ve elevated Dornan’s name at the time, his career hasn’t exactly been damaged by losing out on the chance to play Superman.

Conan O’Brien’s Irish ancestry

US television host Conan O’Brien discussed his Irish heritage in a recent appearance on the popular Irish podcast SECOND CAPTAINS. He said his childhood consisted of “lots of church, lots of religious instruction, lots of guilt, and lots of repression”, adding that “sex was never discussed”. “Both of my parents are very Irish Catholic. My mother’s side came from the Cork area. My father’s family came from Dungarvan. They came to central Massachusetts to take up farming. Irish married Irish”.

Sinéad O’Connor in OUTLANDER

Sinéad O’Connor’s last ever recorded song was The Skye Boat Song for time travel drama OUTLANDER. The Irish singer, who died at the age of 56 last month, recorded the haunting rendition of the theme track for the TV show’s final season shortly before her death. A new version of The Skye Boat Song was recorded for each season of OUTLANDER and always featured Raya Yarbrough’s vocals. However, executive producer Maril Davis asked Sinead to perform the tune for the show’s final season. Sinéad recorded the song over two days at Grouse Lodge in Ireland. Maril said she had no idea it would be the last song Sinéad would record.

Emmett J Scanlan in THE TOWER

PEAKY BLINDERS and KIN star Emmett J Scanlan will be back on our screens this month in the second series of tense ITV drama THE TOWER. And the actor is already filming the third series of the gritty thriller, in which his character is set to play a “major role”, its producers have confirmed. Recently commissioned, the third series is named THE TOWER 3: GALLOWSTREE LANE and based on Kate London’s third novel of the same name. It will see the stars of the show return, with Gemma Whelan as DS Sarah Collins alongside Tahirah Sharif, who was BAFTA-nominated for her role as PC Lizzie Adama in the first series, Jimmy Akingbola as DC Steve Bradshaw and Dublin-born Scanlan, who has appeared in the likes of Peaky Blinders and Kin, as DI Kieran Shaw.
