IFTA Rising Star Award Nominations

BRIDGERTON star Nicola Coughlan and BEHIND HER EYES actor Eve Hewson are among five Irish nominees battling it out for the Irish Film & Television Academy’s (IFTA) Rising Star award. Rounding out the five are writer and director Cathy Brady (WILDFIRE), writer and actor Clare Dunne (HERSELF) and writer, director and producer Paddy Slattery (BROKEN LAW).

Liam Neeson on THE ICE ROAD

THE ICE ROAD is Neeson’s latest film, arriving this week on Netflix, and it continues his career’s somewhat improbable second act as an action hero. Neeson stars here as Mike McCann, a trucker who is one of several drivers recruited to transport three large, heavy drills to a remote northern Canada mine in order to free miners trapped in a collapse.

NORMAL PEOPLE earns 7 Baftas

The popular drama, set in Ireland and based on a novel of the same name by Sally Rooney, is nominated in the director, editing, sound, and photography and lighting categories for a fictional television show. Paul Mescal has been nominated in the leading actor category for his performance as Connell, and Daisy Edgar-Jones is nominated for leading actress for her role as Marianne.

FAMINE VOICES returns

The GREAT FAMINE VOICES ROADSHOW is returning with what producers describe as “a brand new series of standalone short films and online discussions beginning with Black Abolitionists in Ireland”. The first program, airing Sunday May 2, features a short film and online discussion and focuses on the story of Sarah Remond’s visit to Ireland in 1859 to win support for anti-slavery, even as her own country was hurtling towards a bloody civil war.
