Cillian Murphy remembers Helen McCrory

Irish actor Cillian Murphy has said it was “very strange” to film the final series of PEAKY BLINDERS without Helen McCrory, as he remembered his “brave” and “magnificent” former co-star. Murphy, who plays protagonist Tommy Shelby in the hit series, said in an interview with Esquire on Tuesday that McCrory was the “beating heart” of the show. A release date for the final season has not been confirmed but the series is expected to air later this month on Netflix.

In a year-end series published by The Guardian, Irish actor Cillian Murphy reflects on his beloved PEAKY BLINDERS co-star, who he remembers as a supremely talented and compassionate performer whose grace and dignity never deserted her. McCrory died of breast cancer at her home in London on 16 April 2021, aged 52. Announcing the death on Twitter, husband Damian Lewis stated that she had died “peacefully at home, surrounded by a wave of love from friends and family”.
