Mescal in SLIP AWAY

Paul Mescal

Paul Mescal makes his debut as a recording artist on the soundtrack for CARMEN, which stars the actor and Melissa Barrera in an update of the classic Georges Bizet opera. In a clip from the Benjamin Millepied-directed film, Mescal delivers the track — one of the original songs co-written by Oscar-nominated composer Nicholas Britell — on acoustic guitar. CARMEN is in theaters in Los Angeles and New York this weekend, while the soundtrack has a wider release (a.k.a. streaming everywhere) now.

Aisling Bea in GREATEST DAYS

Aisling Bea is ready to shine in the new film adaptation of the Take That musical and we’ve finally got our first look at the movie. The Irish actress and comedian shared her delight at being cast in the big-screen adaptation early last year, perfectly titled GREATEST DAYS, which will incorporate the hit music of the 90s boyband. The film, based on the stage musical The Band, is described as being a feel-good story of love and friendship. Aisling plays the character of Rachel O’Flynn who is the band’s self confessed ‘biggest fan in the whole entire world’.

Mescal shines in CARMEN

Paul Mescal and Melissa Barrera are teaming up to reimagine a classic opera in CARMEN. Sony Pictures Classics has released the teaser trailer for the upcoming film, based on an 1845 novella by French writer Prosper Mérimée. Set to composer Nicholas Brittell’s (MOONLIGHT, SUCCESSION) haunting score, showcases 27-year-old Mescal’s character Aidan fighting police and others on the street as he and Carmen (Barrera) fall in love and dance their way across a desert backdrop. Carmen is also shown performing at a nightclub in Los Angeles.

Norton to host Eurovision 2023

Graham Norton

Beloved Cork TV personality and author Graham Norton will host the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest in Liverpool, it has been confirmed. The BBC announced the full presenting team on Wednesday, with Norton set to be joined on stage by singer Alesha Dixon, Ted Lasso actress Hannah Waddingham and Ukrainian singer Julia Sanina. Comedian and former Great British Bake Off host Mel Giedroyc will also be on hand to assist, with commentary provided by Scott Mills and Rylan.

NOTHING COMPARES doc wins BIFA

A Belfast film director has won two prestigious awards for her new documentary on singer Sinéad O’Connor. Kathryn Ferguson was named winner of the Best Debut Director – Feature Documentary category at the 25th British Independent Film Awards in London on Sunday for her film NOTHING COMPARES, which was released in October. The film, produced with the support of NI Screen and Screen Ireland, and which charts the career of the Dublin-born singer from 1987 to 1993, also won the Best Feature Documentary category at the event.

Buckley wows LATE LATE audience

On Friday night’s LATE LATE SHOW in Ireland, Jessie, 32, and her newest collaborator, British guitarist Bernard Butler, wowed the audience with their song “20 Years A-Growing.” Jessie and Bernard recorded an album, For All the Days That Tear the Heart, due for release this month, and they’ll be promoting their finished product with in-person shows including the All Together Now festival in Co. Waterford from July 29-31.
