Hollywood’s breakout star Paul Mescal is about to embark on his longest movie yet, with production taking course over the next two decades. The NORMAL PEOPLE star has started filming the adaptation of the hit stage musical MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG, a story that follows three friends throughout – you guessed it – the 20 years from college to middle age. Helmed by BOYHOOD director Richard Linklater, Paul plays Hollywood producer Franklin Shephard who has a turbulent relationship with longtime friends theatre critic Charley Kringas.

THE LOST DAUGHTER stars Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal are set to reunite for an adaption of the book HAMNET, with Chloé Zhao on directing duties. The historical fiction novel reimagines the story of William Shakespeare’s wife Agnes, who is left struggling to come to terms following the death of her only son Hamnet. The book has earned O’Farrell critical praise for her work, winning the 2020 Women’s Prize for Fiction and the Fiction Prize at the National Book Critics Circle Awards.

NORMAL PEOPLE BAFTA winner Paul Mescal will star in same-sex romance THE HISTORY OF SOUND. an Oliver Hermanus-directed adaptation of an award-winning short story. Principal photography began in summer 2022, predominantly in the U.S. and on location in the U.K. and Italy with Mescal joining THE CROWN star and recent Emmy winner Josh O’Connor. The film focuses on two young men who set out to record the lives, voices and music of their American compatriots who travelled to Europe to fight in World War I.

Paul Mescal to star in HAMNET

In an interview with Vogue U.K., Academy award nominee Paul Mescal says he is set to play William Shakespeare in the upcoming film adaptation of Lolita Chakrabarti’s newest work, HAMNET. The work, described as “a love letter to passion, birth, grief, and the magic of nature,” is based on Maggie O’Farrell’s best-selling novel of the same name, which explores the personal life of Shakespeare and his wife after they suffer the loss of their 11-year-old son to the plague. Directed by Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao, Mescal also states that the film adaptation will co-star Jessie Buckley, recently seen in the West End as Sally Bowles in CABARET, for which she received an Olivier.

Mescal in JAMES BOND talks

NORMAL PEOPLE actor Paul Mescal is in talks to play James Bond in the next film, as the next movie in the spy franchise will star two 007s — one younger and one older. Paul shot to fame in 2020 playing GAA player Connell alongside Daisy Edgar-Jones in RTE and BBC romantic drama NORMAL PEOPLE. The Maynooth native was nominated for Best Actor at the Academy Awards this year for his role in tear-jerker AFTERSUN. Mescal is set for a hot 2024 with the release of his next project, ALL OF US STRANGERS.
